The Ulere are a cult jewel inextricably linked to the Madonna del Soccorso from whose architraves of the canopy they hang in quantity, as if to compose the border of a lace. Each of them is an ex-voto that expresses the deep devotion to the patron saint of the city. Many families in Sciacca but now also in different parts of Italy, jealously keep at least one gift from their grandmothers, great-grandmothers or great-great-grandmothers. Sometimes due to the equal division they were divided into two or three parts depending on the number of heirs, transforming elegant necklaces into other precious accessories. Starting from 1875 called by the vulgar ulere, from the term of Spanish origin gulera, they became very popular and subsequently much sought after. The "Ulere di curaddu" from Saccensi have an average length of 60 cm, but they can also go beyond this measure. The irregular and slightly flattened spheres are generally faceted and degrade towards the ends. The facet gives elegance and a certain sheen, with a color tone varying from light orange to more intense shades occasionally characterized by some brown or blackish spots. These are peculiar characteristics due to the marine-volcanic origin of the seabed where our coral was formed and grew millions of years ago.
Therefore the diameter of the spheres, a certain symmetry of the elements, the typical faceting of the antique cut, the presence or absence of imperfections, together with the total weight, form the elements of certification and evaluation.
